A new thriller has just landed on Netflix, destined to make waves and perfect for a binge-watch weekend. It’s Oasis Resort, a new Spanish series in eight episodes aimed primarily at fans of the HBO show The White Lotus and those nostalgic for atmospheres filled with tropical paradises, luxury hotels, and dark mysteries to solve.
The setting, in fact, is almost the same: an exclusive resort, frequented by the wealthiest families in the country, with private beaches, parties, and VIP services. The protagonist is Dani (Tomy Aguilera), who visits the location for the first time with his family, not imagining that he would find himself embroiled in a police investigation. It all begins when Celia (Victoria Kantch), the concierge he has a crush on, mysteriously disappears from the resort. Everyone is a suspect, from the millionaire guests to the struggling employes. In a desperate attempt to find Celia before the worst happens, Dani joins forces with her best friend Helena (Ana Garcés): together they will discover that behind the mask of money and fun, the resort hides many dark secrets.
We’ll tell you right away: Compared to The White Lotus, this Netflix series has much more teen tones that are closer to those of adolescent series like Élite. The director himself stated that he “wanted to create a mystery story for kids like his daughter, one that talked about friendship, secrets, doubts, and the first decisions that start to define you as a person.” Despite this, the mystery at the center of the story has nothing to envy from other more acclaimed thrillers, and the series is rich in cliffhangers and plot twists, making it perfect for a light and carefree binge-watching evening.
With breathtaking landscapes (it was filmed in Tenerife), ambiguous characters, and a mystery that thickens episode after episode, Oasis offers all the ingredients of a thriller capable of capturing the audience’s attention, while also providing a touch of social criticism on class inequalities and the dynamics between the wealthy guests and the resort employes. If you appreciate ensemble stories where no one is really what they seem, or if you simply want to feast your eyes on some postcard-worthy scenery, this new Netflix production might be just what you need for the upcoming weekend.
